One of the most heartbreaking experiences for parents of children with Autism or ADHD is watching meltdowns become more intense over time. At first, the reactions may seem occasional: a small emotional outburst here, a difficult transition there. But gradually, many families begin noticing a painful pattern: the meltdowns are getting worse, lasting longer, and happening more frequently.

But here's what many parents don't realize: escalating meltdowns are not a sign of failure. They are a sign of accumulated nervous system stress. And when parents understand the trigger cycle, everything changes.

What Is the Trigger Cycle?

The trigger cycle is a pattern where small stressors accumulate throughout the day, slowly building nervous system dysregulation until a final trigger causes a major meltdown.

Morning — The Accumulation Begins

The day starts with small stressors: unexpected changes to routine, sensory overwhelm (loud noises, bright lights, textures), difficulty with transitions, social stress or anxiety, sleep deprivation, hunger or dysregulated blood sugar.

Midday — The Bucket Fills

By midday, the child has experienced multiple small stressors. Their nervous system is like a bucket slowly filling with water. They may show subtle signs: increased irritability, difficulty focusing, emotional sensitivity, physical restlessness, withdrawn behavior.

Afternoon — The Final Trigger

Then comes one more stressor. It might seem small — a minor request, a small frustration. But the bucket is already full. The result: a major meltdown that seems completely disproportionate to the final trigger.

The shoes were not the problem. The shoes were the final drop in an already overflowing bucket.

Why Meltdowns Get Worse Over Time

This happens because of nervous system sensitization. Each time the nervous system experiences a major dysregulation event, it becomes slightly more sensitive to future stressors. The threshold for dysregulation lowers. The bucket gets smaller.
